The university prides itself as the
undisputed academic giant in the country, region and beyond, this is due to its
large number of staff, so don’t be amazed when a fully fledged professor walks
you through an introductory course; the
university believes in quality and that is what you’ll get in your entire stay.
Many young men and women joined this great institution as you are doing it today,
when they left, they became great men and women you see steering this country
to greater heights. Some have left even worse than they came. This is your
opportunity.
Conventional wisdom has it that no
machine works without fault, you may encounter few challenging issues, and am
sure you will, but let them be your eye opener, knowing that the university is
in the city, life might push you to the wall but absorb it and find a way out.
Here you’ll be given the best environment to excel in what you love the most,
its only here that you can challenge your lecturer, learn what you didn’t know,
excel in whichever sport you like and improve tremendously on yourself. Her you
might even get a first class wife. But you should be wise enough to know which
of the many ladies are for a genuine relationship or the one that wants to have
a share of the small monies that you just got from HELB or from the family and
even village contributions.
Engage in healthy relationships and
associations. SONU is a great advocate for the students’ welfare if composed of
the right leaders. Engage and disengage appropriately. If you want to be great
politician this is your training ground, if you want to do business, this is
where it starts. Remember the founder of Zetech College began here in a small
room in Hall 9, James Orengo, Kabando wa Kabando, Martha Karua, Wangari Mathai,
Olive Mugenda, William Ruto to mention just but a few all made their first steps
here.
The University first before all is a
generator of knowledge and ideas. This is where high-flying and innovative
students get rewarded. Great companies and firms have been initiated in Hall 9,
Prefabs, Hall 13, Box, Hall 12, Hall 1, Mamlaka, Hall 5, Hall 2, Hall 7, JKML,
the Great Court and other places that define the University of Nairobi.
Intellectus Consultancy is such one firm. Intellectus Consultancy is a youth
oriented Think Tank that is based on the ideology of youth and Intellectualism.
Its motto is ‘Litteratos et Progressum’ which is Latin for ‘Experts and
Development’. It is a firm that was formed by University of Nairobi Students
from the departments of Political Science, Quantity Survey, Economics,
Philosophy, Literature, Business, Communication, Law students class of 2013 and
has steadily grown to encompass all the campuses in the University of Nairobi
and other Universities in Kenya which include Egerton, K.U,, Pwani and others.
The CEO is the ever-energetic and charismatic former student leader Ken Mwangi
while the Deputy CEO is the outspoken and also former student leader, Yusuf
Omete. The composed and greatly knowledgeable Melchizedeck Onguso Ochengo, a graduate
of Political Science and a law student at Parklands Campus, UoN is the Company
Lawyer and Legal Adviser. Emily Githinji, a sociology and economic student at
the University is the Compnay’s Financial Secretary. Intellectus Consultancy believes
in nurturing talent and at the helm of its management is the teen Company
Secretary Dennis Kabutha. David Oyola, John Okul, Musyoki Ndolo, GSO Ouma Kodhek, Ndege
Serkal, Juma Odhiambo, Steve Antony Ougo (Malips) and Maggie Nyokabi and others
are part of the dynamic management. The firm contribute to intellectual thought
in Kenya be it politically, socially, culturally or economically. This gives
the youth an opportunity to use their knowledge and expertise in various fields
for the advancement of the Nation and indeed the region. IC gives opportunities
to the youth to participate in the Intellectual discourse by the way of
presentation of papers in conferences, the local dailies as well as the
opportunity to interact with university scholars, carrying out scientific
research and training on scientific writing and publishing. On the 5th
of January this year, IC was able to send Nyakiya Nyakiyaism to represent us in
a peace mission in Kigali, Rwanda that was discussed the militarism in Uganda,
DRC and CAR, the civil unrest in South Sudan and the Alshabaab Threat that has
affected Kenya and Somalia. Nyakiya came back to Kenya on 12th Jan
this year and he has so much to share with the Kenyan youth.

Walking around the beautiful serenity
of the university, you will definitely come across a dignifying landmark called
the Fountain of Knowledge; in it is a true illustration of life in the great
university, three huge giraffes, each with a meaning. One giraffe is standing, strongly
facing the city, the second stands strong facing the university grounds and the
last giraffe has its neck bending to the water pool beneath it. This is indeed great
use of symbols to illustrate student life, the first giraffe looking at city represents a student
who understands that the university does
not only offer you quality education, it also offers you a lifetime opportunity to
create networks, learn from the challenging city life and graduate as a
wholesome successful student.
The second giraffe standing strong
facing the university ground paints students who join campus and their life is religiously
spend in class and the Jomo Kenyatta library, them at the end of their stay,
score excellent grades but only a few get a first class and masters scholarship.
The third giraffe symbolize students who join campus, get so excited about
being in the city and forget their core business of being in the university,
most of them overstay in campus up to ten years, are easily expelled, some
drink themselves to stupor, others become drug addicts, smoke bang, others get
sick with unimaginable diseases, go mad and worse of it some die before
finishing school. It is therefore up to you to choose which giraffe will you want
to be: the choice is solely yours.
Whether you are coming here to study
to be a doctor, a politician, social worker, an engineer, a banker or a
journalist, understand that this is the best opportunity to explore your full potential, determine yourself to do the best,
make friends, love, learn more, discover and walk around the city. What will
matter is not how you joined four years later, but how you will leave after
